The City of Lights. Gay Paree. City of culture, art, romance, history. The great city has had time to accumulate its full complement of rich stories and associations, since it lies in an area occupied long before even the ancient Roman era. Yet, Paris lives fully cognizant of and comfortable in the modern world. No single era of change can disturb the fundamental charm of this monumental European capital. Things to do in Paris:
1. The Eiffel Tower
Originally built as a centerpiece of the 1889 Universal Exhibition, the tower is one of the world’s major attractions. Visitors may wait in line and pay extra to ride via elevator, or make a taxing, but unforgettable, walk up the stairs to the second level. The top is accessible only by elevator.
2. Musee du Louvre
Starting at the aesthetically controversial glass pyramid outside, and moving past the likes of the Winged Victory and the Mona Lisa, visitors experience a showcase of art treasures that justifies its world-icon status.
3. Chateau de Versailles
It’s good to be the king. Versailles is an astounding, expansive property with a palace, gardens, walks, lodges, and fountains. Visitors may now see the tremendous opulence conjured up at the whims of the Sun King.
4. Arc de Triomphe
This great monument was commissioned by Napoleon, and now stands as one of Paris’s greatest symbols. Visitors may stand on the top of the monument, and also visit the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
5. Montmartre
The distinctive, steep-sided hill in the center of Paris holds aloft the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur (Church of the Sacred Heart). Climbing the steep streets, past the artists working in the open, tourists flock to this graceful, white-stoned structure.
6. Notre-Dame
Lying at the true center of Paris, one of the world’s greatest cathedrals graces one of the world’s great cities. Notre-Dame cathedral shows interesting carvings and sculpture over its entire surface. Visitors also may enjoy the view from its south tower.
7. Seine Boat Cruise
The bateaux-mouche tours allow a view of this island city from the water. The great sights of Paris on both banks are available to tourists gliding along under stone bridges.
Paris is packed from floor to rafters (or to the beams of its famous Tower) with vivid experiences. From its lively cafes to its more enduring stone monuments, there is always something to see.
